Material Durability Test- Martindale

Martindale durability test or Martindale method is a procedure that measures the suitability and durability of test materials for domestic or industrial application.

Material Durability test

How Does It Work?

By placing the fabric on a Martindale machine, we can test its durability. The machine repeatedly rubs special discs made of waxed wool against the fabric. We check the fabric throughout the test for visible changes, like signs of wear and tear in appearance. The test sends when the discs wear out or the fabric shows significant damage.

How do we read Martindale units?

The results obtained at the end of the test of each fabric sample are rounded to 5000 cycles/rubbing and thus divided into several categories.

< 10.000 Units: Decorative use

If Materials do not reach 10,000 units, the fabric is suitable for decoration. These include decorative cushions that beautifully enhance the furniture and have become an indispensable part of every living room due to their multifunctional use.

10.00 – 15.000 Units: Occasional home use

Fabrics crafted with delicate yarns or intricate constructions, are suitable for occasional domestic use due to the delicate yarns composition or the delicate construction of the fabric itself. Some decorative fabrics are not suitable for use on surfaces with a greater load, such as sofa beds or movable armchairs. The materials require dry cleaning.

15.000 – 25.000 Units: Normal daily home use

This category features materials well-suited for everyday use on living room furniture like chairs, stools, and sofas. However, these materials are not suitable for furniture with moving parts like adjustable recliners, due to potential wear and tear.

25.000 – 30.000 Units: Frequent daily home use

Top choice for main pieces of furniture like sofas, chairs, and stools that see daily use. Also, suitable even for furniture with moving parts, like recliners. Plus, it offers surprising versatility, holding up well in light commercial settings.

> 30.000 Units: Commercial use

Suitable for all commercial and of course frequent domestic daily use, including in beds and in adjustable recliners.

Are materials with many Martindale units indestructible?

In the textile industry there can be competition for higher abrasion test results, but in the real world a value above 50,000 has very little impact on wear. In fact, high Martindale units don’t guarantee indestructible furniture. The Martindale test is used exclusively to measure abrasion. However, there are many other factors that can affect the wear and tear of a piece of furniture’s upholstery, including UV radiation, the chemicals used in washing, and surface treatments such as fabric protection or fireproofing treatments.
